End of 2023 - To better beginnings of 2024!

Kiss for mistletoe

Happy holidays!

We hope you all had an enjoyable and safe holiday break! Feel free to skip down to the Red Rebellion heading if you're uninterested in what else we were busy with ^^;

The continual curse of this year has not eased up in the last few months. My mold/termite bedroom ceiling, which we thought had survived the previous rain storm, did not survive the heavy rain last week... So my room is still inactive and insurance will not be pleased by the ongoing issues. Mold levels were tested to be 5x the acceptable limits >_<; *sighs*

Mizuchi News

OLED Switch Devkit preview at the Viridian Software office

The current team was busy working on Mizuchi's console release involving translations and a new trailer with edited music. We had a lot of translation issues with the Chinese localization agencies, who straight up plagiarized and lied about issues we didn't have, and they had the gall to ask for more money to fix the mistakes they put into the work. These are localization agencies that show up at various gaming conventions in Europe and Asia, and market themselves to publishers... they should be banned.

So pretty much it threw everything off track trying to fix it all on time. But of course, we ended up repeatedly missing the expected deadlines. Also, there were issues with porting Renpy 7 plugins, which shouldn't be a problem if your Renpy game is built in the newer version 8. We finally submitted it for console certifications about 3 weeks ago... sadly we're a bit burned out at this point from all the LQA/QA testing, and trying to fix our sleep schedules.

Playstation 5 Box Cover - Asia Release General Design

I'm still waiting for the co-publisher to announce the new console release date. The physical Switch and PS4/5 versions (all 4 languages) will only be available on Amazon.jp, and Asian and Japanese retail stores. Otherwise, you can find it in the digital console stores. These are the All-Ages version (Steam without patch).

Soft Source will also be hosting a booth at the Taipei Game Show with Mizuchi as one of the big focuses!

Red Rebellion News

Sofia with a gift from Robin Hood

My current work involves more RR research by finishing up a few more chapters about the period King and society. Finish the last bit of character notes. The game is now very complex trying to handle multiple characters and their backstories, so I'll also be learning how to use Scrivener so we don't forget any important historical details!

The programmer is now going to convert the RR demo to version 8. I have been mulling over one of your feedbacks about wanting more choices earlier on. After discussing with other devs and team members about "meaningful choices" and "false choices", we decided we would remake the beginning a little bit and tweak the game mechanics too. We'll be adding a map and Nalcyon is now busy brainstorming ideas on how it'll look. Wish her luck!

We also contacted our 3rd consultant, historian Claire to help with one of our character's backstories ^.~ Not hard to guess who! Claire runs Bustles and Broadswords - a podcast about women with swords throughout history with a specifically queer lens, created by @carmineclaire. Have a listen!

Located in Nottingham City is a local inn!

We also finished a few new BGs and looked up more references and designs for a few characters' outfits. Hope we have more lovely things to show next update!

Happy New Year!

Backerkit Survey is released! Introducing our first consultant~
11 months ago – Fri, Jun 02, 2023 at 03:30:58 AM

Hello everyone!

Royal blue background with a black and white sketch of a medieval woman holding lilies.

Now that my shock has worn off, I'm happy to announce the survey is now out ^_^ You should receive it at your Kickstarter email address. If you'd like your Backerkit assigned email address to be something else, message us here as I have to manually edit it on my end.  It will be the email address you will need access to in the future in order to retrieve all of your digital pledge rewards. It doesn't change the KS email updates though.

I've been told by the team to take a break. Their goals for me are to fix my sleep schedule, play video games to gain new ideas, and read books. So far, I've managed to touch base with artists (must find more art references) and been busy chatting with our new and lovely history and culture consultants ^^; How am I doing so far...? (I can hear my teammates and dev friends groaning through the internet).

Perhaps I should finish that Zelda BOTW game that's been halfway done since 2018... I've been steadily working on Mizuchi and Red Rebellion ever since after all ^_^; I do have a short vacation coming up, so I'll try not to work... (too much...)

Anyway~ I would like to introduce our first history consultant, an English medievalist, Thaliarchus! He'll be joining the team as a developmental editor in both story ideas and nailing down the medieval-friendly language format for the game's dialogue. His strengths will be a big help with getting the world-building accurate and helping me with finding research material. He'd like to say hello!

"Hi everyone! I'm Thaliarchus. I have a doctorate in medieval English and in my day job I teach and publish on the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries; I'm also into VNs, anime etc, so when I heard about Red Rebellion I figured I should probably lend a hand. I'll be bustling round my local legal deposit library to gather background material, and chipping in where I can to advise on the writing. I want to help the team draw on historical details, but—remembering that this is historical fantasy—without ever letting history cramp their style or block a good idea for the story. I'm excited to see this project grow!"

I've been really inspired by his gathered research material so far, which will make the scenes feel extra real :D Care to guess what this may be?

Black background with a orange outlined multiple room like space.
No spoilers! ^.~

Wish us luck!
